About the Author
John E. McMurry received his B.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Foundation Fellow. He has received several awards, which include the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, and the Max Planck Research Award. In addition to ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, he is also the author or coauthor of ORGANIC CHEMISTRY: A BIOLOGICAL APPROACH, FUNDAMENTALS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY OF BIOLOGICAL PATHWAYS.

Not much different than the 7th Edition

This textbook is readable, and has some useful reaction summaries at the end of each chapter. I was able to attain the 7th Ed for much cheaper, and I would highly recommend doing the same because after comparing the 2 side-by-side... In addition, during class lectures the professor frequently pointed out errors in the book's diagrams/pictures...which again made me feel comfortable returning the book to amazon for the 7th Ed.
Amazon did a great job fulfilling the initial order, and the return process was simple/fast.

Great, But Buy The 7th Edition

the text explains the information very well and is very straightforward. The book also contains very colorful and visual diagrams, especially for spectroscopy. The 8th edition is in the same format as the 7th edition except the stereochemistry chapter comes earlier, but the material is the same. If your class requires owl, buy the code and the 7th edition. That will save you a lot of money. Just looking out for the broke college students.

It does the job

This book is very pretty and has some nice pictures and explanations, but some of it was really hard to follow. I did excellent in General Chemistry but trying to keep up with some of the explanations was really challenging for me. Perhaps it was just the material, but I found the professor's explanations more useful than the text (usually it is the other way around for me), though the text was a good supplement. If you are taking Organic Chemistry, I would recommend working through Organic Chemistry as a Second Language before you start the term. You'll find it much easier to keep up in class.
