Needs a good editor, but the content is helpful for those seeking to understand the basics of Ethiopian Orthodoxy.

This small book is more of a doctoral dissertation, and a very intimate introduction to the belief and practice of the Ethiopian Orthodox church from the perspective of the author who has lived in several Western nations. I felt that it was enlightening and informative. It is not an exhaustive doctrinal statement, but more of an overview and introduction. I also appreciated his analysis of the challenges that the Orthodox church faces in Western nations. I appreciate his ecumenical view and openness to Western Christians. The book is repetitive in some sections. I gave it 4 stars because it was what I was looking for and I was pleased with it. It is a good introduction to Ethiopian Orthodoxy.

In the title story, a tooth is pulled, "the gum parting with a sound like uprooting potatoes." Still other stories evoke darkly stained, often disturbing, images of human nature: A young woman remembers cowering behind her mother's skirts at the spectre of Fearless, the eponymous bogeyman, who would "clink and drag" up the street "like Marley's ghost." In "later he would open his eyes," an elderly couple's suicide pact has the old man imagining their car as it plunges off an embankment "ticking over like a child's cough. Ticking over and lurching as though it might stall." If it is the job of the serious writer to recreate experience and give it new life on the page, then Galloway ( The Trick Is to Keep on Breathing ) should be gainfully employed for many years to come.

A story collection from Scottish writer Galloway--reflecting a typically bleak late-20th-century British landscape and informing ethos--makes its American debut. Galloway writes about a sunless world of grimy streets, drunken men, and brutalized women. Many of the pieces are little more than brief sketches of a mood, place, or character; others resemble scenes from a play. All are relentlessly downbeat, even macabre. In the title story, a callous dentist dismisses a young patient after an extraction, ``with an unstoppable redness seeping through the fingers of her open mouth.'' In ``Breaking Through,'' a beloved cat is allowed to burn to death while a little girl watches; and in ``Two Fragments,'' two equally nasty explanations are given to a child for her grandmother's glass eye. Three notable pieces are: ``Later He Would Open His Eyes in a Strange Place, Wondering Where She,'' in which an elderly couple read the biography of Arthur Koestler, then decide to imitate him by committing suicide together; ``Plastering the Cracks,'' where a young woman engages some workmen but, later, eavesdropping through the wall, becomes fearful of their intentions; and ``A Week with Uncle Felix,'' in which Stenga, a withdrawn young girl unable to ask questions about her long-dead father (``You couldn't ask what he was like: that was the kind of question you never got much of an answer for. Or it got turned into something else: drunk and violent'') is abused by an elderly uncle. Powerful images and ideas in stories often too elliptical and fragmentary to engage fully. About the Author
Janice Galloway's first novel, The Trick is to Keep Breathing, now widely regarded as a Scottish contemporary classic, was published in 1990 and won the MIND/Allen Lane Book of the Year. Her second novel, Foreign Parts, won the American Academy of Arts and Letters E. M. Forster Award while her third, Clara, about the tempestuous life of nineteenth-century pianist Clara Wieck Schumann, won the Saltire Award in 2002. Collaborative texts include an opera with Sally Beamish and three cross-discipline works with Anne Bevan, the Orcadian sculptor. Her 'anti-memoir', This Is Not About Me, was published by Granta in September 2008 to universal critical acclaim. She lives in Lanarkshire.

Virtuoso work

This book of short stories has no one theme, but gets it shape and unification from Galloway's strong, highly individual voice and the eerie atmosphere of fear and tenderness it manages to convey. From the very short (The Meat) to the longer pieces (A week with Uncle Felix) this collection rattles with desperate life, vivdness and a visceral edge all its own. I defy anyone to read BLOOD (the title story) without feeling the sensation of a former tooth extraction, though what she does with the story goes much further, turning an everyday, unremarkable mutilation into a parable threaded with loss, yearning and isolation from the the herione's dearest source of comfort, music. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to read more in the contemporary Scots voice or who enjoys virtuoso writing for its own sake. Galloway is a rare, brave writer.

The strange bits I have found in blood

The inside of Janice Galloway's head scares me. Blood is a bizarre but mesmerizing collection of strange short stories, unsettling almost-plays, and uncomfortable snapshots of human nature. Her words walk that sharp line between brilliance and madness, and you are never quite sure what side you have landed until it's much too late. These stories are clever and brutal. Twisted things happen to a menagerie of misfits. Simple, everyday events are carefully braided together into something with which you will end up flagellating themself after a few pages. And there are never more than a few pages; you don't know if you really want there to be more pages. But, really, you do.

text reflects decades-long trends in computing

Leader has written this book to reflect several trends in maths during the last 20 years. One has been the rise of symbolic algebra, as exemplified by the success of such packages as Mathematica and Maple. A student who uses those to get analytic solutions to problems might simply fail to appreciate any compelling need for numerical analysis. Thus Leader offers examples of when such symbolic algebra methods fail, and numerical methods are necessary. His examples are good, but I'm not sure they will suffice for some students. Because if a maths student does not appreciate numerical analysis, even before taking any course in it, then is this merely inexperience, which Leader addresses in the book. Or it is that the student is simply not very bright? If the latter, then the book's efforts might be futile.

Another trend which the book reflects is the ready availability of powerful maths packages that can perform numerical analysis. He chooses to use Matlab. Indeed, if you are already facile in this field, but need to thoroughly learn the capabilities of Matlab, you can use the book as a field guide.

It is this which is the main qualitative difference between the book and those of the 70s and 80s, from which I learned the subject. There is now less need to give examples of source code for, say, applying Newton's Method of root finding. Because Matlab (or equivalent packages) already implement the method. So you can concentrate on higher level issues.

The order in which he presents various subjects seems logical enough. Though you should not necessarily feel bound by this. Most chapters can be read in any order. One apparent curiosity is how the first chapter is on nonlinear systems. While the second and third chapters are on linear systems. Most texts reverse the order, since linear systems are typically considered simpler, and their analysis can usually be taken much further.

It should be said that the nonlinear equations in chapter 1 are actually quite simple. And they let Leader easily introduce such ideas as the above mentioned Newton's Method.

Great Reference and true Matlab Tutorial

I took Numerical Analysis from Professor Leader before he published this book. He gave all his students in the class his latest draft free of charge. (Which I thought was rather kind of him). I was only a sophmore at the time and a lot of the analysis went over my head, but the Matlab sections were great and have set me up for a lot of Matlab programming that has come my way ever since.

As they say Practice and theory are the same in theory, but in practice they aren't. This is all too true for numerical analysis. Leader approaches theory and practice, making both clear. (Though, reader here be warned, some theoritical parts are somewhat thick especially without proper analysis background.)

I am currently taking a slightly higher level Numerical Analysis class than the one Leader taught. The book required for the course is "Numerical Analysis," which isn't well written (essential steps are missing, things are skipped, theory isn't well explained, and the "practice" is practically non-existant in the book), so I pulled out Leader's book and found the information I needed to understand for the course and do the homework. (And the programming for the course isn't that difficult since I already have that down from Leader's book.) Leader's book has been a great reference.

Another good book in the field is Numerical Methods for Unconstrained Optimization and Nonlinear Equations by J.E. Dennis Jr, and Rober B. Schnabel. (A classic in Applied Mathematics.)

In short, Leader's book is good, and Leader is a good guy.

I highly recommend the book.

Do Not Buy This Outdated Book

I purchased this book through Amazon.ca and was horrified to find out that it is a re-print of the 4th Edition first published in the late 1940's. The book is now in it's 10th Edition !!!!!! The world of Gemmology has changed radically even since the 10th Edition so unless you want the book for sentimental reasons, do not buy it.

Not much different than the 7th Edition

This textbook is readable, and has some useful reaction summaries at the end of each chapter. I was able to attain the 7th Ed for much cheaper, and I would highly recommend doing the same because after comparing the 2 side-by-side... In addition, during class lectures the professor frequently pointed out errors in the book's diagrams/pictures...which again made me feel comfortable returning the book to amazon for the 7th Ed.

Amazon did a great job fulfilling the initial order, and the return process was simple/fast.

Great, But Buy The 7th Edition

the text explains the information very well and is very straightforward. The book also contains very colorful and visual diagrams, especially for spectroscopy. The 8th edition is in the same format as the 7th edition except the stereochemistry chapter comes earlier, but the material is the same. If your class requires owl, buy the code and the 7th edition. That will save you a lot of money. Just looking out for the broke college students.

It does the job

This book is very pretty and has some nice pictures and explanations, but some of it was really hard to follow. I did excellent in General Chemistry but trying to keep up with some of the explanations was really challenging for me. Perhaps it was just the material, but I found the professor's explanations more useful than the text (usually it is the other way around for me), though the text was a good supplement. If you are taking Organic Chemistry, I would recommend working through Organic Chemistry as a Second Language before you start the term. You'll find it much easier to keep up in class.
