Incredible book one of a kind and well worth the price!!
By S.
This book is astonishing. Well written, accurate information detailed and lovingly written by a collector and drum machine enthusiast. I have been producing music for ages and have had and currently have several of the machines in this book. The pages on the TR 808 alone are worth the price of the book. I have the package that includes the 7" record and cassette complete with beats made from many of these machines and trust me it was a worthwhile purchase!!. Unfortunately I made a possibly foolish decision to sell my Roland 808 just this year and now feel happy that at least I find it gracing the pages of this AMAZING book. Don't miss this as I fear the book will become as difficult to obtain one day as the machines that grace its pages.

really cool

Got this as a gift and really dig it. the book itself it nice and heavy with thick pages. the photos are great looking. the cassette and record are an awesome bonus for us nerds to playback and sample if we please. The writing is informal and fun to read, but if reading isn't your thing, you could spend plenty of time just staring at the awesome photos. Makes an awesome addition to the coffee table or bathroom.

Great for the drum machine enthusiast!
By K. McQueen
I received this book today and completely devoured it. I am a drum machine enthusiast, but more of the programmable variety. Many of the instruments in this book have a home in my personal studio. I was glad to see the Casio VL-1's appearance as it was my first keyboard synth... and the beats used to drive my classmates nuts back then. The fact that the book is rap/hip hop heavy didn't bother me, being more of rock guy. However, the artists interviewed, like Schoolly D and Davy DMX are solid musicians/producers. An interview with Marshall Jefferson is a nice shout out to the house scene. The real golden interview, and too short like the others, is an interview with Roger Linn, a true innovator without many popular music genres would have been delayed in their development.
The book also seems focused on the 1980s despite an ample preface of classic rhythm boxes of yore. Joe Mansfield does a pretty good job providing reference to some popular hits - and not just hip hop - of the bygone era, which really seems like a golden era of drum machines after reading this book. Yes, there are exclusions. In particular, some of the Korgs like the DDD-5 and the Casio RZ-1. Mr. Mansfield doesn't really get into the 1990s or beyond. This probably due to the use of samplers, a preference towards vintage boxes that were rapidly walking out of pawn shops, tone clone units like the Novation Drum Station, or maybe that's all for another book. Although I my Boss DR-550, DR-660, Korg Electribe ER-1 and Akai XR-20 are fun they would seem kind of redundant and not really advanced compared to their predecessors.
However, I feel this tome is very well timed as it seems drum machines are currently experiencing a renaissance with the Roger Linn/Dave Smith Tempest (very nice LM-1 and LinnDrum sounds in the ROM amongst others), the Korg Volca Beats, and the Roland TR-8.
Another bonus is the bonus beats download of 40 classic rhythms from some those machine of old.
Definitely a lot of fun for the enthusiast and a recommended primer for anyone interested in where those beats originated.
