About the Author
Adrian Becker is a Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem, Israel. This textbook is pure gold.
Written by probably the most significant researcher on the topic of impacted teeth and eruption disorders (A. Becker) it covers pretty much all the aspects an orthodontists should know.
The book contains a large variety of clinical photographs, radiographs and CBCTs as well as in-depth analyses of all features of various impactions (prevalence, risk factors, clinical characteristics, radiographic characteristics, associated anomalies, etiology, treatment options etc).
What makes this textbook unique is that it combines clinical information (the author is considered a guru in the orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth with many years of clinical experience both privately and as a Faculty member of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem - Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine) with information from the literature (a large amount of references at the end of each chapter) and an emphasis on current evidence. So don't expect an easy read.

In my opinion, this textbook should be mandatory in all postgraduate orthodontic residency programs, together with a more general textbook (Proffit or Graber) and a fair amount of peer-reviewed articles.

All the Italian You'll Need

This is a great, pocketable phrasebook. It's well laid out for quick references, and includes a handy dictionary (both to and from Italian) in the back. Some of the best features:

* A handy "tear-out" page with the essential essentials. Pop this in your wallet, and you'll be able to communicate any time, anywhere.
* Lots of truly useful phrases other guides leave out. In the food section, you'll even learn how to tell servers about your food allergies.
* The simplest pronunciation guide I've ever encountered.
* Italian gestures. For example, if you want to indicate you want one of something, use your thumb. (You'll also learn some gestures to avoid.)
* Humor. You'll pick up a few phrases you definitely won't use in your travels... but you'll enjoy the light-hearted touch they add to learning a little Italian.

If you're middle-aged or older, you'll probably need your reading glasses to use this guide. But it'll be worth the effort. This phrasebook should make your trip to Italy a lot more fun.

Not that good

I'm going to have to break with other reviewers here, and give my less-than-stellar review of this book. We purchased this before we left for our European trip to Paris and 3 cities in Italy. We also purchased the French book by Steve's. Before we left we thought we'd found the perfect book with the perfect phrases, although they were harder to find due to the way he lays out the book. But after much research we settled on these books and were happy....until we had to use them in France and Italy. I quickly discovered that although the book had helped with pronunciation, almost none of the words we needed were in the dictionary in the back, nor could we find simple words or phrases in the proper sections of travel and dining, that we found in real life situations. This was very disappointing, first in France then in Italy. I quickly went to Google translator, put in all the phrases I needed but did not find in the book, and wrote them all down. This helped tremendously. I also searched for words that weren't in the dictionary and wrote them down, as well. Almost every night I did this as we encountered new circumstances that the book didn't have anything helpful for. Also, when you're in the moment and you need something, trying to find first the section which seems haphazardly placed in the book, then the area of the section where the phrases are located, then go down the list for the correct phrase, is time consuming of time you don't have, and frustrating when after all that time you don't find what you need. Meanwhile the person you're trying to speak to is just staring at you. Things worked much better when I whipped out my handwritten phrases and asked my direct question. Just remember that you probably won't understand what their answer is unless it's a simple yes or no.

After this trip my advise is to borrow basic language books from the library, type out what you need and get a good pocket dictionary if you need, something with substance which this dictionary is not. Use Google translator for the most used phrases you think you'll need and go from there. Save your money on this book.

It was really small and the writing was small

This book was really small - much smaller than I thought it would be. It was like a pocket-size book. I guess that's the point so you can carry it with you. The words were small and it was just kind of boring. It had no color or flare. Also, the tear out sheets that they mention are just the same thin paper as the rest of the pages. You'd think it would be a thicker stock of paper - almost postcard like, but it's not.

However, the book was really good in its setup. At the beginning it had common phrases so you could learn phrases, rather than just a word at a time. Also, it broke it up into sections such as a restaurant section - so phrases that you might need to use at a restaurant. It also had individually words in Italian to English translation and then a section that followed, which was English to Italian translation.

All in all, it was a good book for learing some common phrases and I liked how it separated the book into sections so you could learn phrases for different scenerios (i.e. being at a restaurant).

An Essential Purchase If You Want To Travel To Australia.

This book has the sort of nitty-gritty information any would-be tourist or Working - Holiday Visa explorer of Australia will find essential. Whether you want to know if you can get it in a Cairns nightclub ( apparently if you can't get it there there's no hope for you!), which pub to unwind in after a beach-barby, or which bus to take to get to the nearest backpacker's accomodation, you'll find it in here more easily than asking an ozzie local. Which, by the way, should you need to, won't be a problem with the amusing but practical run down on dodgy expressions like 'cobber' and 'stubbie'. Howver, it is more than just a practical run down on entertainment, accomodation and travel. There are accessible potted-guides to history, geography, culture and politics. In addition there are full-colour sections on flora and fauna, and a wonderful aborginal art run-down. And if you get bored, every few pages you'll find a quick 'boxed-aside', telling you concisely everything you need to know, from the Sydney Olympics, to snakes, to buying a car in Australia. Buy it and go there!

Time for a change?

I have made four trips to Australia using various versions of this guide. You have to remember that it started off as a backpacker's/ alternative travel guide and has kept the strengths (in depth coverage of offthe beaten track areas) as well as the weaknesses (concentrates on low end travellers) of that approach. It needs to be not just revised and updated but also completely rewritten from scratch. The book is also geared to the traveller who is already in Australia. For example, it is extremely sparing in giving out email addresses and, after all these editions, still does not give the Australian postcodes for places. In its attempt to cover the entire country, it has also gotten very bulky and inconvenient.
I like Lonely Planet and its guides, but I think that it is time for them to either abandon or change the focus of this country-wide guide. In the meantime, I am relying on their series of Australian State guides for my next trip.

Disappointing LP Offering

I was relatively disappointed with LP's Australia offering - I've been told that The Rough Guide is better. The book provided information typically found in LP guides, but was inadequate in numerous areas - particularly in providing comprehensive lists of tour operators and hostels. As with most LP books, it was short on advice and in-depth information on places, but provided valuable basic information on destinations. It was certainly better than not having a guide, but I missed out on some great opportunities because the guide's information was inadequate.

Heart-wrenching insight into the life of women in Iran

Kooshyar Karimi is now a doctor in Australia. I listened to his interview with Richard Fidler on ABC radio and have since wanted to read this book.
This book tells the story of two main characters living in Iran - Leila and the doctor.Their lives are connected through a plea from Leila to the doctor for his assistance with an unwanted pregnancy, which in this society has placed her life at risk.
The Doctor, the author himself, has had an impoverished start to life, but with the encouragement of his highly ambitious mother has been educated and is currently an author, translator and a doctor. He is Jewish and married to a Muslim woman. He has taken his life in his hands by developing a reputation for helping with terminating pregnancies, a practice of which he says he would normally not approve , but feels is justified in order to save the lives of the females involved, who may otherwise face death from their brothers, father or others. In most cases the pregnancies have resulted from sex without consent.
Leila is a little different from the other women, and we are told the story of her life through her own eyes. She is the second daughter in a very traditional Muslim family where she is treated like a slave by her father and brothers. She is obviously a very intelligent and curious woman and has a strong desire for further education, but her father has not allowed this pursuit. As a consolation, she has taken to reading and visiting the library regularly. This is her only unaccompanied venture from her home allowed. It is on her journey from the library that she meets and falls in love with someone who will cause her great pain and distress.
As the author states at the start of the book, this is based on true characters and real events. It is hard to comprehend the complete lack of options and choices that are available to these women.
It is a book which was absolutely compelling and was difficult to put down. It is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming at the same time. It is beautifully written and well-told.

A compelling read on a very sensitive subject

I wanted to write to the author after reading this book as it moved me so much. Beautifully written about such a taboo subject. It was awful to read how these poor girls live, not only in fear of their parents but the stigma of becoming pregnant and unmarried was fearful. A compelling read from start to finish, well done Kooshyar karimi

I'm not sure which book I liked better - Out of the Darkness or Taken. They are both fantastic books. I was so excited to see this book released and bought it right away (I didn't even try the sample first!). This book had it all - suspense, drama, passion, unconditional love, romance and very tasteful love-making. I highly recommend this book. It does not disappoint!

Eric Conway teaches earth science in Carroll County, Maryland. The Maryland Space Grant Consortium aims to provide statewide and national leadership in aerospace science and engineering education research. Great guide

Great information on how to read satellite images. Will greatly help in Meteorology studies whether you're a student or a more advanced hobbyist. It is best to have an introduction into meteorology such as "Meteorology Today" before reading this book. It will help in your understanding of the text.

An intensive exploration of satellite image-based weather analysis.

There are not a lot of textbooks that cover satellite-image based weather identification and forecasting, and luckily, Conway's book is still available. He starts out covering ca. 1990s satellite image technology and moves on to sat-based geography before diving deeply into sat image interpretation for weather forecasters and enthusiasts. Conway's approach is outstanding, simultaneously providing the reader with the weather theory that is manifest in the sat images. I run a NOAA APT satellite downlink system at home (receiving signals from the NOAA polar orbiters on 137MHz and processing the telemetry w/software) so I put what I learn from Conway to work every day. Overall, it's a fascinating, well written book. I hope that this book gets an update someday, so as to take advantage of the advances in weather satellite imagery in the last 15 years since it was printed.
