A Renowned Master And Author At His Best: Still Current

Reuben Fine was one of the world's leading chess authors - as well as being a strong master himself -and was extremely influential and well-known. I bet if you asked 100 Grandmasters and authors, 98 would've heard of Fine. In this book, Fine emphasizes developing in the player the ability to analyze a position and to proceed accordingly. There are sections on mating attacks; combination play; how to handle superior positions, even positions; continuations of the openings; and transition to the end game. Maybe many of us think that the old books are outdated and stodgily written. Not so with Fine. I think that this is a clearly-written tutorial book, excellent for learning to plan, and more "solid" than say Silman's "How To Reassess Your Chess." If you see this available anywhere, BUY IT!

This volume by the estimable Reuben Fine, in my opinion, still ranks as the finest incisive overview of the Middle Game in Chess.

Since tactical motifs, combinations, and just plain not going periodically blind (as all humans do) are such key elements of the Middle Game, it is a topic that is especially difficult to write about in a useful manner.

The organization, thoroughness, and suitability to players at the club and middle tournament level are what makes this volume so outstanding. Written by one of America's finest and most underrated grandmasters, it is nevertheless completely lucid and full of practical insights that can benefit all players trying to improve their game.

The Best Middle Game Book

There are many good books on openings and the end game, but there are few good books on the middle game. This is the best I've read on the middle game. I never had an official rating, but I hold my won against "A" players. So I would say that this book is definitely useful for up to "A" players and probably beyond.

I used to play the openings reasonably well and could pull off some pretty neat tactical tricks. But if there were no tactical opportunities, I just drifted until the end game. But this books shows how to assess your position and what to make of it from there.

Why Doha is so important to us all

I am sure that many of the things described in this book appear in economic history textbooks but I doubt if any are as readable. The account romps through centuries of complex geopolitics to explain why trade - as much as finance - is the lifeblood of social and economic development. The story never slows. It seems authentic and -in those few areas I know- accurate. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone who likes to know how the world ticks, or ticked, and why Doha is so important to us all.

It was during this period that I began my continuing love affair with this subject, and the fact that it happened while I was a student in an organic laboratory is beside the point. I was always enchanted by the more physical aspects of inorganic chemistry; while being captivated from an early stage by the synthetic side, and the measure of creation with a small c that it entails, I nevertheless found the application of various theoretical, spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques to inorganic compounds to be fascinating, stimulating, educational and downright exciting. The various bonding theories, for example, and their use to explain or interpret spectroscopic observations were more or less universally accepted as belonging within the realm of inorganic chemistry, and textbooks of the day had whole sections on bonding theories, magnetism, kinetics, electron-transfer mechanisms and so on. However, things changed, and subsequent inorganic chemistry teaching texts tended to emphasize the more synthetic and descriptive side of the field. There are a number of reasons for this, and they no doubt include the rise of diamagnetic organometallic chemistry as the dominant subdiscipline within inorganic chemistry and its relative narrowness vis-d-vis physical methods required for its prosecution.

What a rare find, and includes "Tell Me To My Face" (by Stephen Stills) and "Since You've Asked" (by Judy Collins). Other songs include "Lahaina Luna," "Guitar Etude No. 3," "Twins' Theme," "Lazy Susan," "Hurtwood Alley," "The Power of Gold," "InTimidation," and "Paris Nocturne." Out-of-print and glad I found this to replace my tattered and torn older songbook (although still has many miles on it to go before I break in this copy in excellent condition). A+!!!!!

A nice encyclopedia of metaphysical, mind-body healing relationships and the psychospiritual messages your body is relaying

Your Body's Telling You: Love Yourself is a book by metaphysical healer and teacher Lise Bourbeau. This is an encyclopedic guide to mind-body healing and the metaphysical roots of illness and disease. First published in 1997, the most recent print edition is from 2002. This book examines the subconscious reasons why we get sick or injured and the symbolic meaning inherent in the parts of our body and the symptoms we experience. Following the introductory portion of the book there is an alphabetical listing of numerous health issues and the accompanying physical block, emotional block, mental block, and spiritual block that may be present with that condition. Bourbeau has spent many years compiling this information and has maintained a personal growth school in Quebec, helping thousands of people help themselves and others to heal.

This book makes it easy to research any particular symptoms or health concerns you may have and get some insight into how your field of consciousness is creating that pattern or physical reflection. Bourbeau concludes the book with a section where she states that "The only path to complete and permanent healing is through self-forgiveness. This is the only step powerful enough to let go of your illness on every level, as it addresses not only your self-love but also the very heart and blood in your physical body." The author also provides a brief list of recommend references, which includes the best-selling You Can Heal Your Life, from Louise Hay.

Common themes in this book include the discussion of early childhood experiences and how they were processed foster future illness. Bourbeau also addresses the role of Soul memories ("past-life" memories) and genetic or ancestral consciousness patterns in manifesting illness. Furthermore, she discusses the role of cultural beliefs and mass consciousness in patterns of illness, such as infectious disease epidemics. There is a lot of valuable insight in what she shares, while she points out that those conditioned to follow their ego self and place external blame on their situation will tend to reject what this type of book offers. In truth, the metaphysical perspective is the one that is truly empowering and supportive of genuine healing. There are many stories in our world of miraculous healings for those who embrace this approach.

This book is quite valuable in helping us look more deeply at things and recognize that physical reality is a projection, a reflection of what we carry in our consciousness. It does not mean we should not address things on a physical level - it just encourages us to take steps toward addressing issues at their deepest levels. Bourbeau's book offer specific suggestions for ways to shift our consciousness and for steps to embrace forgiveness.

This book is available as a paperback and ebook, and is available in many different languages. For those that wish to examine this subject even further there are additional books I would recommend. Books that explore German New Medicine, Biogenealogy/Biodecoding, and the books of Michael J. Lincoln, Ph.D. (Messages From The Body, and others), are valuable guides to decoding the underlying meaning and messages in your body's symptoms. In fact, Lincoln's Messages From The Body book is really the most comprehensive reference book currently available in this field, although it is just available as a spiral bound book and not as an electronic book. Bourbeau's book is a more condensed presentation on this subject, one that may be easier to read and to fit on your book shelf.

About the Author
Jeff Schewe is a professional advertising photographer and digital imaging consultant who has advised on and contributed to the development of Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw and Adobe Photoshop to the extent that his name appears in the software's acknowledgements. Until his death in 2006, Bruce Fraser had been an internationally known author, consultant, and speaker on the topics of digital imaging and color reproduction. Very broad scope, excellent writing...

First off, it is worth noting the organization and intent of this book is very close to that of the edition for CS3 so reviews of the CS3 version may be of use to you even though this newer edition of course contains lots of new material related to the new features of ACR 5.2.

Second, note I said ACR 5.2 above. 5.2 was a bit unusual for Adobe in that it actually introduced some very important new features over 5.1 rather than just new camera profiles. Fortunately publication of this book was held until 5.2 was released so that these new features could be covered here.

Third, one should very much be aware that really only a portion of the book is specifically dedicated to the Camera RAW controls and how to use them (specifically Chapters 4 and 5). The earlier parts of the book mostly focus on RAW shooting and conversion in general and the later parts of the book focus on a work flow using Camera RAW and Bridge. This seems appropriate since discussing the concepts of RAW shooting in general is applicable to Camera RAW and many photographers use Camera RAW primarily because it fits into a Photoshop based workflow so smoothly. That said, do yourself a favor and use the look inside feature on this book to examine the contents and get an understanding of how much of the book is dedicated to these "ancillary" topics! If you already know about RAW and shoot it extensively then chapters 1-3 may be of limited interest to you. If you don't process so many photos that workflow is an issue for you or you already have a workflow that you feel is so mature you don't need any more ideas or input then the later part of the book might not be of interest to you.

With those qualifiers out of the way I can easily give this book five stars. Written by someone "on the inside" of the development of ACR and with a structure that still follows the now departed Bruce Fraser's previous excellent work there is little to find fault with. All of the features of ACR are thoroughly covered and great examples of their use are given. ACR itself has come along way to now being an incredibly full featured converter, perhaps one of the most feature laden in the market, and like other Adobe products benefits greatly from third party documents such as this book.

Again, perhaps my only reservation is that so much of the book is not about ACR itself and not everyone may find the related information useful. That said, it is hard to call this "bonus" material a fault since the information on ACR itself is complete and comprehensive.

Eagerly awaited, this book does not disappoint. A must for photographers.

Given the spectacular improvements and advances incorporated into Adobe Camera Raw version 5.2, I awaited the arrival of this book with great expectations. That it does not disappoint is meant as the highest praise from my perspective. That it already addresses ACR 5.2 is most welcome, as the feature set increased very substantially from 5.1 to 5.2.

Mr Schewe is to be commended for keeping the fundamentals laid out by the late, lamented Bruce Fraser, as well as for covering what's new in a thorough, clear and understandable way.

If you're shooting RAW, this book is essential reading. The leap forward in this version of ACR is astonishing, and one would waste a great deal of time in trying to figure everything through any other means. Warmly recommended.

As I was reading this book, I was reminded of the small child's review of a book about penguins: "This book told me more about penguins than I really wanted to know." Except of course that for the intermediate user of Photoshop, you should want to know what this book has to say.

Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) is a plug-in built into Photoshop CS4 (PSCS4) that provides adjustments to digital images taken in the RAW mode. Most PSCS4 books include a chapter on the use of ACR that will useful for those just getting used to the plug-in. However to get the full benefit of ACR's capabilities for the rapid processing of images, it helps to consult a book dedicated exclusively to ACR.

This book is credited to Jeff Schewe and the late Bruce Fraser. Fraser, a well known and liked PS guru, was responsible for earlier versions of the book and his hand is still visible. The book includes not just instructions on the use and capabilities of all of ACR's buttons, sliders and options, many of which are not immediately obvious, but also chapters on Adobe Bridge, the control center for PSCS4, as well as chapters on workflow, metadata and automation. The book does a fine job of clearly explaining all of these tools and even expert users may find that ACR has help that they didn't know existed. Even though most of ACR's functions can also be accomplished in the main PSCS4 software, ACR can be faster, adjustments are never destructive, and you will need a converter anyway for raw files.

Although the book contains a lot of useful information, the chapter which showed actual examples of the use of ACR to adjust particular images really helped to understand the usefulness of the plug-in. The chapter on metadata opened up some new ideas about the uses of this "information about information".

Although the book is quite comprehensive it was by no means exhaustive. For example, I felt that the section on configuring Bridge could have used a few more examples but most users will probably be able to figure out the possibilities with a little thought.

One issue not covered by the authors is the comparison between ACR and Lightroom. The camera raw functionality is just about the same (with the exception of a point tone-curve in ACR) but the Lightroom interface is so much easier to use, and you get an asset management program as well. On the other hand you get ACR when you buy PSCS4 and you have to lay out additional money for Lightroom.

ACR can speed up your processing of files and has lots of capabilities. This is a good place to learn how to maximize its use.

Patricia Broder is a specialist in art of the American West. She authored Bronzes of the American West, the Best Art Book of 1974 awarded by the National Academy of Western Art, and Hopi Painting: The World of the Hopis as well as several articles published in Southwest Art, American Art Review, Arizona Highways, and Persimmon Hill.

Ecstasy & A Little Agony

Dean Cornwell was, indeed, a master of American illustration and anyone who shuddered at the $800 pricetag the first edition has been sporting over the years will find the new edition of this long-out-of-print classic welcome. Cornwell was a gifted painter and knew how to tell a story with a single canvas: his art is as engaging today as it was in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. But the downside to this new edition is that it *is* an exact reprint of the first: that means 3/4 of the book's color paintings are printed in black and white. Cornwell was such a master of color that it seems a crime that the publisher didn't take the time to go back and replace at least some of the readily available works and present them as the artist painted them, especially at a hefty $75 cover price. This is the only Cornwell book available and as such is an important part of any art library: however, it is *not* what a $75 Dean Cornwell book *should* be and buyers should be aware that the majority of "Dean Cornwell: Dean of Illustrators" is printed in black and white.

A Legacy Reclaimed

Dean Cornwell's legendary stature among American illustrators is rightfully restored by the reissue of this excellent 1978 retrospective. Cornwell, revered by his peers and his generation, had fallen into an entirely undeserved obscurity in recent years, but the work here emphatically places him in the front ranks of his profession. Looking through these pages, it's hard not to feel that the commercial artists of Cornwell's time easily surpassed the fine artists. Certainly, it's hard to imagine how someone who could draw and paint this way would be received today.
This attractive book is a thorough and comprehensive collection of color work, studies, and sketches, all with commentary and excellent reproduction.

Introduces a major American talent to a whole new generation

Dean Cornwell was the instructor and an icon for a generation of American illustrators and muralists. Capturing and expresses the evolving aesthetic and social values of American culture from 1914 until his death in 1960, his work was exceptionally popular with both the general public and the art critics of his time. With both black-and-white as well as color examples of his work, Dean Cornwell: Dean Of Illustrators has long been out of print and unavailable to American art history studies. This superbly reproduced and presented Collectors Press edition is a very welcome contribution to personal and academic artbook collections and will well serve to introduce a major American talent to a whole new generation of students and aspiring artists and illustrators.
