Special Agent Annika Trace is the hottest thing in law enforcement—at least on TV. Her long legs, designer suits, and hunky sidekick have garnered millions of fans, one of whom—a four-year-old kidnap victim named Linzie—is refusing to talk to the real FBI. In desperation, Special Agent Trace—a.k.a. actress Nikki Gower—is called in to help.

Special Agent Josh Saxon became a hero when he brought Linzie back safely. Now he’s out to catch the kidnappers and doesn’t need some Hollywood caricature of a federal agent interfering in his case. But when Nikki establishes a rapport with the child, Josh admits she might just get him enough information to track down the culprits. And even as Josh and Nikki spar over the best way to get the job done, another rapport is being established—on a much more physical and decidedly more adult level—as Josh discovers firsthand how Nikki makes the airwaves sizzle.

* Bonus Material! This book includes the pilot episode from Nikki Gower’s hit TV show, Trace Elements.

"Fresh and new. . . the chemistry between the characters helped make this book a very memorable read. . . . Kate Donovan sails up on my list as another favorite author." —Beate T., Goodreads

GOWAN & SAXON vs. CASTLE & BECKETT
By Snarky Mom Michelle
(Originally published on SnarkyMomReads)

I'm a huge fan of the tongue-in-check humor employed by the TV series, Castle, where a writer tags along & helps a New York city detective solve crimes. What makes it even better is that the writer(s) of Castle have decided to make Richard Castle "real" - with his books being published, series being made into graphic novels and even a website. Imagine the fun I've had with the opportunity to read (in exchange for an HONEST review) the recently published novel, "TRACE ELEMENTS" by Kate Donovan! I think I enjoyed it so much because it has vague similarities to Castle with its expanded media...

"TRACE ELEMENTS" is a 191 page romantic suspense novel penned by Kate Donovan, but tag-lined as if it were an actual television show. Josh Saxon is an FBI agent who recently found & rescued a kidnapped four year old and is still trying to solve the "whodunnit" of the kidnapping. To help the young child feel safer, the parents request that the FBI approach the actress of their favorite FBI TV show, Nikki Gower, who portrays Agent Annika Trace, will come reassure the girl she is not in any more danger. (See where it's going here? An actress in a TV show, portraying an FBI agent, needs to come "be" an FBI agent, etc....)

While at times the premise seems a bit far-fetched, well, that's why it is fiction. It's funny to see the dialogue between the real agent & the "real" agent... and interesting to watch them fall for each other. Again - while it seems a bit far-fetched... IT'S FICTION. The mystery in the story is entertaining and not too transparent that it can't keep a reader involved, and it's funny how Nikki thinks about everything in terms of what her character would do or how the show would go. Most interesting, though, is that at the end Kate Donovan has written the "TV Pilot" for the original "Trace Elements" show. Now, I have to admit - at that point, I was starting to feel a bit dizzy, with the show within the book about the story surrounding the show... whew! Get what I mean? And really - this roundabout poking fun at itself is what makes this such an enjoyable book!

At $2.99 this is a great value - and since it looks as if Kate Donovan has quite a backlist of novels, you may just find another author to add to your TBR (to-be-read) pile!

Not what I expected, but better.
By HannahPilar
I didn't know what to think when I first got this book, maybe it was a Castle type story minus Nathan Fillion, I was wrong. This was a great book lovable characters and not a sugar coated storyline.

Special Agent Josh Saxon has hit a dead end after the successful return of four year old kidnapped victim Linzie. She has remained silent about her kidnappers due to the trauma she had to endure, she has only one wish to speak to her favorite T.V. character, Special Agent Annika Trace. The FBI bring in actress Nikki Gower to help. Josh is not happy when he first hears that they are bringing in an actress to help but soon changes his tune when Nikki bonds with the child bringing her a little further out of her shell everyday she is with her enough she is able to help give clues and identify suspects.

The chemistry between Josh and Nikki is electric. Unable to keep it professional they soon end up in bed together, but between the case and the baggage from his past and her current issues they always end up arguing after sex and making up a few hours later. I really do like this book, but I am a fan of FBI stories so it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked reading it. I want more I hope to read more books from the series, my hope for the series is that it doesn't get to soap opera-ish.

B+ rating.....
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
I had received another one of Kate Donovan's books for review (Play by Play and it was also good and creative) and it included the first chapter of this book. I found myself intrigued by the creative story line and immediately purchased and read it (totally ignoring the 1000+ books already in my TBR pile.) This book and this author have definitely been a pleasant surprise.

Like I said, the story line is incredibly creative. Josh is an FBI agent and he's in the middle of a case that's getting worse and worse. He saved a 4 yo little girl from a kidnapping, but they didn't catch the kidnappers. He needs her to give him information, but she's completely clammed up and won't tell him a thing. She's terrified and as the hours and days go by the chances of catching the kidnappers become even slimmer.

In an act of desperation, they bring in actress, Nikki Gower, who plays an FBI agent on the 4 yo's favorite TV show. They hope the little girl will trust her enough to talk to her. Nikki isn't your typical actress. She fell into her career on the way to actually working for the FBI. The creator of her TV show has used her life as inspiration for the show. But Josh is less than thrilled to have her there meddling, until it starts to work and he begins to realize that she does have a natural talent for this.

This book is just the start of the series and although the book ends well, there's a few loose ends out there that you can see are definitely going to come up in future books. I can't wait!

It's a great set-up for a book and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more. There were a few rough spots in the book (especially in the first half) where the character actions gave me a bit of whiplash in their too rushed changes of heart and actions. But overall, the book was good enough that I could overlook that. Kate Donovan has a great writing voice and I foresee it getting better and smoother as she goes on. Her stories are very creative. The two I've read have been great just in the completely new twists that she includes in her stories. Overall, her books are easy to read and her characters are absolutely fabulous. I definitely look forward to reading more!

The Monuments: The Grit and the Glory of Cycling's Greatest One-day Races, by Peter Cossins

The Tour de France may provide the most obvious fame and glory, but it is cycling's one-day tests that the professional riders really prize. Toughest, longest, and dirtiest of all are the so-called Monuments, the five legendary races that are the sport’s equivalent of golf's majors or tennis grand slams. Milan-Sanremo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Lige-Bastogne-Lige, and the Tour of Lombardy date back more than a century, and each of them is an anomaly in modern-day sport, the cycling equivalent of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Time has changed them to a degree, but they remain as brutally testing as they ever have been. They provide the sport's outstanding one-day performers--the likes of Philippe Gilbert, Fabian Cancellara, Mark Cavendish, Tom Boonen, Peter Sagan, and Thor Hushovd--with a chance to measure themselves against one another other and their predecessors in the most challenging tests in world cycling. From the bone-shattering bowler-hat cobbles of the Paris-Roubaix to the insanely steep hellingen in the Tour of Flanders, each race is as unique as the riders who push themselves through extreme exhaustion to win them and enter their epic history. In The Monuments, Peter Cossins tells the tumultuous history of these extraordinary races and the riders they have immortalized.

Excellent historical account of cycling`s greatest one day races… In depth research and readable prose make this a must read for the serious cycling fan… Only downside was a bit too much emphasis on the earliest days of each race; nonetheless the overall experience is very informative and enlightening.

Tugboats Illustrated: History, Technology, Seamanship, by Paul Farrell

A gorgeously detailed guide to the evolution, design, and role of tugboats, from the earliest days of steam to today’s most advanced ocean-going workboats.

From river to harbor to ocean, tugboats are among the most ubiquitous but underappreciated craft afloat. Whether maneuvering ships out from between tight harbor finger piers, pushing rafts of forty barges up the Mississippi, towing enormous oil rigs, or just delivering huge piles of gravel to a river port near you, tugs exude a sense of genial strength guided by the wise experience of their crews. We can admire the precision of their coordination, the determination in their movements, the glow of signal lights at night, silently communicating their condition and intentions to vessels nearby. It is nearly impossible not to be intrigued and impressed by the way tugs work.

In Tugboats Illustrated, Paul Farrell traces the evolution, design, and role of tugboats, ranging from the first steam-powered tug to today’s hyper-specialized offshore workboats. Through extensive photographs, dynamic drawings, and enlightening diagrams, he explores the development of these hard-working boats, always shaped by the demands of their waterborne environment, by an ever-present element of danger, and by advancements in technology. Whether making impossible turns in small spaces, crashing through huge swells, pushing or pulling or prodding or coaxing or escorting, we come to understand not only what tugs do, but how physics and engineering allow them to do it.

From the deck layout of a nineteenth-century sidewheel tug to the mechanics of barge towing―whether by humans, mules, steam or diesel engines―to the advantages of various types and configurations of propulsion systems, to the operation of an oil rig anchor-handling tug/supply vessel, Tugboats Illustrated is a comprehensive tribute to these beloved workhorses of the sea and their intrepid crews.

By Shorty
I found this book as engaging as it is delightful and informative. One might expect a book on the life of tugs to offer only quick diversion, but Tugboats Illustrated provides a deep dive into a fascinating and surprisingly rich subject. Having spent time near the oceans, harbors and river ports throughout my life, unanswered musings about working boats & ships that have floated around my head since childhood, and this book gives them satisfyingly coherent form and context. While many of the specific boats featured are in the northeastern US, the scope of the book is more global, helping to explain the visual characteristics of tugs, and why they look the way they do. The many tasks that tugs perform are beautifully described, and both the universal similarities and the local peculiarities that shape the design and development of tug design and operation are brought vividly to life.
The photos and illustrations are effective at introducing and describing individual topics within the chapters, and the text provides lucid and occasionally poetic reinforcement for the graphics. But the illustrations are the real stars. The drawings are consistently clear and communicative of the point being explored, whether in a simple drawing of a "boot-heel pilot-house", or in sophisticated cut-away views of propulsion systems. The drawings are not showy or elegant, but (like tugs themselves) they are pragmatic and charming, and express the author's great skill in explaining great complexity with graphic aplomb.
If you ever suspected that tugboats were cool, this book will confirm your suspicions, and let you know why!

Hard to Catagorize
By Amazon Customer
This book was not what I expected, when I placed my order. I thought it would be similar to other transportation related books by this publisher and consist of a large number of well-composed high quality photos of tugs and their operations with substantive supporting text. Instead, the preponderance of the illustrations are made up of the author's sketches of tugboats, selected associated components and systems, and key functions. The photographs, most of which are in color, depict very few tugs in their entirety thereby not providing a very good overview of how tugboats evolved and how those used by different companies differed. The book presents itself as a high-level overview with a somewhat whimsical slant.

My real question is who is the intended audience for the book. It almost appears that it is meant to be a book for juveniles instead of a serious work for people with an interest in maritime subjects. For example, one page consists of a reproduction of a NEW YORKER magazine cover depicting whales docking a cruise ship, while another has sketches comparing a tug looking like a house with a house looking like a tug. It does not compare well, in my opinion, with previous books on the subject published in the UK.

Having said this, the author has created some good explanatory sketches, which along with the text are generally accurate. I believe it would appeal to younger readers or an adult with a passing interest in maritime matters.

I purchased this book for my father-in-law as a Boat-Warming (is that a thing?), and he loves it! The images are awesome, and it's chock-full of information about tugboats. Definitely a niche audience, but if you're into tugboats, go for it!

Three stars Kindle; Five stars hard copy
By E. Scott
This book contains important information that all genealogists need to attend to. Others have written with clarity about the subject matter. My comment here has to do with the utter inadequacy of the Kindle version. The book involves reading, then doing exercises at the end of the chapter, then referring to an appendix, etc. This is not handy on the Kindle. To achieve the full benefit of the knowledge contained, one must consult the print version. Definitely purchase the book if you're interested in the subject.

E-book Not the way to Go
By Revlynne
The book deserves 5 stars in non e-book format. Trying to read the e-book and then try to return to a special page or jump forward to study it.....I wish I had bought the hard copy. Dr. Jones is an expert in his field and the book is filled with wonderful information and helpful ways to document one's genealogical work.

Breaks the proof process down in reasonable chunks in easy-to-understand language
By J. Peter Thayer
This book is very good at breaking down the genealogical proof process in discrete easy to grasp chunks. I'm already implementing some of the many points covered in the book. It is also written in easy-to-understand language and goes the extra mile to provide a glossary of terms discussed throughout. Highly recommended amateur genealogists like myself who need a better understanding of what's involved with the GPS (Genealogical Proof Standard).

Fighting on Two Fronts: African Americans and the Vietnam War, by James E. Westheider

The racial tensions that have long plagued American society exist to a much lesser extent in the military where the bond of common pursuit and shared experience renders race less relevant. Or so conventional wisdom has long held.

In this dramatic history of race relations during the Vietnam war, James E. Westheider illustrates how American soldiers in Vietnam grappled with many of the same racial conflicts that were tearing apart their homeland thousands of miles away. Over seven years in the making, Fighting on Two Fronts draws on interviews with dozens of Vietnam veterans—black and white—and official Pentagon documents to paint the first complete picture of the African American experience in Vietnam.

Westheider reveals how preconceptions and petty misunderstandings often exacerbated racial anxieties during the conflict. Military barbers, for instance, were often inexperienced with black hair, leading black soldiers to cut each other's hair, an act perceived as separatist by their white counterparts. Similarly, black soldiers often greeted one another with a ritualized handshake, or dap, as a sign of solidarity, the unfamiliarity of which threatened many white soldiers and was a source of resentment until it was banned in 1973.

Despite ample evidence of institutional racism in the armed forces, the military elite responded only when outbreaks of racial violence became disruptive enough to threaten military discipline and attract negative attention from the civilian world. A crucial addition to our understanding of Vietnam, Fighting on Two Fronts is a compelling example of the new military history at its finest.

From Library Journal
During World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen proved that African Americans were exceptional members of the military (see the recent A-Train, LJ 1/97, and Red Tails, Black Wings, LJ 2/15/97). Yet by the time of the Vietnam War, African Americans still suffered a high degree of discrimination. Westheider (history, Northern Kentucky Univ.) chronicles the treatment of African American soldiers during this period. For example, white soldiers were promoted at a faster rate. Moreover, if a white and a black soldier were arrested, the black was the more likely to receive harsher punishment, even for a lesser crime. Westheider deals with racial discrimination in the military in a documentary and scholarly manner, so general-interest libraries must decide whether the work fits their needs. Highly recommended for African American collections and/or military studies.?Terry L. Wirick, Erie Cty. Lib. System, Pa.

From Booklist
In 1965, African American U.S. soldiers faced the first war in which they served in an integrated army. They eagerly sought combat billets to prove themselves, interpreting the idea that it's smart to stay in the rear as an expression of cowardice. By 1968, matters became less clear cut, as the army and the soldiers faced the consequences of the civil rights movement, antiwar movement, and bureaucratic successes and failures in dealing with institutional racism. Westheider has researched very thoroughly--an effort including extensive interviews with Vietnam veterans--and he possesses a rare gift for narrative that makes the results of all this research eminently readable. A highly desirable addition for both African American studies and military affairs collections, Westheider's invaluable history inevitably throws light on dealing with other forms of discrimination in the armed services, too. "Westheider has researched very thoroughly-an effort including extensive interviews with Vietnam veterans-and he possesses a rare gift for narrative that makes the result of all this research eminently readable. A highly desirable addition for both African American studies and military affairs collections. . . . [an] invaluable history."

-Booklist

"James E. Westheider persuasively argues that black soldiers were the key factor in bringing about a more egalitarian military. This book significantly advances our understanding of both race relations and armed forces."

-Charles Moskos,Northwestern University

"Highly recommended."

-Library Journal

"With this meticulous investigation of how institutional racism operated in the military of the 1960s and 70s, James Westheider provides us with a model for making sense of institutional sexism in the Tailhook-era military."

-Cynthia Enloe, author of The Morning After: Sexual Politics at the End of the Cold War

"A very powerful account of a significant aspect of recent American military history."

Excellent Overview
By Gerry Fahrenthold
The book is an excellent overview of the issues facing African Americans in Viet Nam. Westheider views the racism facing African Americans in the military at that time as being the result of both personal racism, primarily from a military heavily populated by whites from the southern US, and institutional racism, both deliberate and unintentional, from the military hierarchy. Westheider shows an interesting evolution of the attitude that African Americans toward the military. Before the Viet Nam war, African Americans held a generally positive attitude about the military and viewed the military as less racist than society in general. By the end of the war, African Americans viewed the military as more racist than society in general and suspected that the military was, in fact, a tool used by society to persecute African-Americans. He uses a number of statistics to make his case. For example, in 1964, thirty percent of the population of Alabama was African American and yet there was not a single African American on any Draft Board in Alabama. There is information on racial violence in the military, racially motivated "fragging" of officers and political and ethnic oriented organizations in the military. The book is an excellent overview and is a good introduction to the subject. I enjoyed the book but I finished the book thinking that there is much more of this story to be told

The Science of God: The Convergence of Scientific and Biblical Wisdom, by Gerald L. Schroeder Ph.D.

For the readers of The Language of God, another instant classic from "a sophisticated and original scholar" (Kirkus Reviews) that disputes the idea that science is contrary to religion.

In The Science of God, distinguished physicist and Biblical scholar Gerald L. Schroeder demonstrates the surprising parallels between a variety of Biblical teachings and the findings of biochemists, paleontologists, astrophysicists, and quantum physicists. In a brilliant and wide-ranging discussion of key topics that have divided science and religion—free will, the development of the universe, the origin of life, and the origin of man—Schroeder argues that the latest science and a close reading of the Bible are not just compatible but interdependent.

This timely reissue of The Science of God features a brand-new preface by Schroeder and a compelling appendix that addresses the highly publicized experiment in 2008 in which scientists attempted to re-create the chemical composition of the cosmos immediately after the Big Bang. It also details Schroeder’s lucid explanations of complex scientific and religious concepts, such as the theory of relativity, the passage of time, and the definitions of crucial Hebrew words in the Bible. Religious skeptics, Biblical literalists, scientists, students, and physicists alike will be riveted by Schroeder’s remarkable contribution to the raging debate between science and religion.

From Library Journal
Schroeder (Genesis and the Big Bang, LJ 9/15/90) is an Israeli physicist and scholar of Genesis who maintains that a properly understood Bible and a properly understood science provide consistent sets of data. In recent decades, scientific discoveries in cosmology, paleontology, and quantum physics do not demonstrate or prove the activity of God, but they do remove conflict with that activity. Rapprochement occurs when believers read the Bible on the Bible's terms, avoiding literalism, and when scientists realize that science is powerless to pronounce on a purpose for life. Schroeder is very lucid in explaining difficult scientific concepts, such as the passage of time according to the theory of relativity, and religious data, such as the original Hebrew words. Schroeder's careful and responsible handling of the data on origins from science and Genesis 1, combined with a fresh, judicious correlation between the two, is compelling. Highly recommended.?Eugene O. Bowser, Univ. of Northern Colorado, Greeley

From Kirkus Reviews
This account of creation is the latest entry in the current endeavor to drag science and religion within shouting distance of each other. Schroeder, a physicist and Bible scholar (Genesis and the Big Bang, 1990), attempts to reconcile the Genesis account of creation with current scientific knowledge about the origin of life. No doubt he is well versed in both the Bible and biology; he's also a skilled pedagogue, explaining abstract or counterintuitive concepts in lay terms. But this book will fail to convince many readers because the author so relentlessly seeks to persuade the reader of the validity of some strange theories, and because his biblical interpretations draw on an exclusively Jewish tradition, including Kabbalah, Maimonedes, and selected passages from the Talmud, which he claims ``anticipated'' later scientific discoveries. Admittedly, some of his arguments (for instance, that the sequence of Genesis creation is congruent with evolution's progression from prokaryotic to human life) are compelling. But elsewhere Schroeder less convincingly rejects the notion of random, mutation-driven evolution, arguing instead that evolution is ``channeled'' toward an outcome preprogrammed into existing DNA. Schroeder's other theories include an odd insistence upon a pre-Adamic, soulless hominid ancestor. It's important to Schroeder that the literal Adam be the first ensouled human being, and since Genesis chronology (almost 6,000 years since Adam) doesn't mesh with what science tells us of the age of humankind, Schroeder sets out to prove that the Bible only picks up the story near the close of human development. Such hermeneutical gymnastics seem strangely outdated and obscure in an often intelligent, cogently argued book. Though respectful of both science and faith, this book is unlikely to convince either scientist or theologian. (b&w illustrations, not seen) -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
"This engaging and humane book advances the dialogue beyond the clichs and stereotypes of which both scientists and religious believers have been guilty." -- Washington Post

"Schroeder offers fresh evidence for the eternal argument that science and religion, matter and spirit, need not be seen as conflicting or mutually exclusive." -- Publishers Weekly

Thinking outside the box,-- a seminal effort worth a read
By A Customer
As a scientist in an ongoing search for truth, I have been disappointed by ham-handed efforts of the creation crowd to cling to extreme minority viewpoints of credentialed scientists from diverse fields of science that would collectively be required to support a *literal* interpretation of Genesis. Similarly, I have been mystified by scientists who reflexively dismiss the idea of some kind of intelligent design outright by way of circular reasoning, arguing that since intelligent design can never be disproven, it is not scientific and thus could not be truth, since only science can properly assess truth.
It is hard to understate, then, the moxie of Schroeder's innovative attempt to reconcile with Genesis scientifically DOMINANT paradigms (i.e. universe many billions of years old, terrestrial life hundreds of millions of years old, species variation to extensive degree by alteration or differential expression of genes). Schroeder introduces his intent thus: "In the following chapters, I attempt to avoid the subjective tendency of bending Bible to match science or science to match Bible." (softcover p.19) Whether he was successful or not is in the eye of the reader, but the explicit intent is refreshing.
This book, then, would be of particular interest to two groups:
1) Scientists who wonder how their mainstream conclusions could possibly be reconciled with ancient accounts of creation from the Hebrew Torah.
2) Jews and Christians who are discomforted by the apparent incompatability between the text of their faith versus the observed truth about our planet and universe as collected and interpreted by the VAST MAJORITY of professional scientists.
The prime example of this reconciliation is Schroeder's attempt to fit a 15-billion year old universe with the six-day account of Genesis by arguing that: 1) from a collective, "Creation-wide" perspective, time advanced differently in the primordial hot universe (time dilation), and 2) that "days" in the ancient hebrew text only adopted the terrestrial perception (instead of universal perception) of time passage upon the creation of man late in the "creation" process.
Later chapters address other issues, such as the likelihood that genetic variation by mutation at rates observed in today's laboratories (or even much greater rates) were sufficient to generate the speciation evidenced in the fossil record within the abbreviated time-frame indicated by the fossil record itself.
By virtue of his theological background and professional training (MIT-trained physicist), Schroeder is uniquely qualified to attempt such a reconciliation. However, as evidenced by several previous reviews, this training is not enough-- at least not enough to win over skeptical scientists. It may be that the sheer enormity of burgeoning data within each of the fields (molecular genetics, population genetics, paleontology, geology, as well as cosmology and particle physics) is simply too great for one individual to incorporate into solid perspective within *each and every* discipline to present an airtight case on all scientific fronts.
Previous reviewers have asserted gross inaccuracies with the science presented in this book. As a clinical neuroscientist, I am not in a position to assault or defend Schroeder on evolution, genetics, particle physics or cosmology. However, I would argue against throwing the baby out with the bathwater. For example, the latest data on cosmic background radiation indicates an accelerating expansion of the universe, and an approximate age of 13.7 billion years instead of the 15 Schroeder cites. Must this nullify the core of his whole premise? Maybe so, but not enough to discard this book out of hand.
The strength of this work is in its innovation. Schroeder rightly notes that the Bible is silent on many subjects, and actually leaves room for many observed phenomena, such as speciation and niche-filling by DNA alteration. It is only the rigid mindset of many religious individuals that closes this possibility.
The weaknesses of the book lie in the specific physical science undergirding Schroeder's arguments, as well as in his over-reliance on conjecture. I thus was left with the same mind-set I had before I read the book, namely that the simplest explanation for why the Genesis account is not borne out by the findings of mainstream science is that Genesis was inspired and spoke great *truth* on a metaphorical and didactic level-- but not at a literal level.
On the whole, I found it a fascinating read. In accord with previous reviewers, I liken this effort to a Model-T. Crude in the light of today, yet innovative at its introduction, with the potential to be honed with further investment in this line of reasoning. This whole line of inquiry would benefit enormously by some kind of COLLABORATIVE work, with each chapter penned by a bona-fide expert in that field of the physical sciences, where this expert can build a much more solid case in conjunction with the totality of data in his or her field. I could even envision anonymous contribution, inasmuch as publicly arguing for some kind of intelligent designer is probably not conducive to garnering tenure in the Paleontology Department of Secular State University....

Gilles Deleuze: An Introduction, by Todd May

Other books have tried to explain Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995), one of the twentieth century's most important and elusive thinkers, in general terms. However, Todd May organizes his introduction around a central question at the heart of Deleuze's philosophy: How might we live? He demonstrates how Deleuze offers a view of the cosmos as a living entity that provides ways of conducting our lives that we may not have even dreamed of.

Review
"...a well-organized and accessible account of a difficult philosopher." - De Philosophia, Stephen B. Hawkins, University of Ottawa

"The trajectory May suggests for reading and understanding Deleuze is incisive and suggestive. We can only hope that in the near future we will see more of May's work on Deleuze, including a deeper and more thorough engagement with the problems that he so rightly and elegantly identifiies." - Ella Brians, The New School for Social Research

A lucid introduction to Deleuze--that might change your life
By David Morris
This is a great, beautiful and timely book. It introduces Deleuze's philosophy by first of all having us think about a problem central to Deleuze's philosophy, the question "How might one live?" From this question, May unfolds Deleuze's ontology of difference and his views of life, thinking, science, language, teaching and politics. The book is compelling and highly accessible-and does something no other book on Deleuze that I know of does-precisely because it gets us to see Deleuze's point not simply through Deleuze's difficult writing and novel concepts, but through a familiar question that each one of us might live. And so May takes us into an enormous and rich field of life, from Prigogine's and Monod's science of chaos and chance, to the Palestinian intifada, to the life of John Coltrane, to life in urban America, to erotics.
Gille Deleuze: An Introduction is a book not simply for the scholar or the student, but for the one who might want to live differently, who might want to see how thinking differently about the world and life can open a different way of living. It might change your life. It might not. It should be read.

A fairly solid introduction to Deleuze...
By Brian C.
There are two general introductions to the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze that I feel comfortable recommending to the first time reader of Deleuze. One is this book by Todd May, and the other is Gilles Deleuze (Routledge Critical Thinkers) by Claire Colebrook. In some ways I think that Claire Colebrook's book is slightly more accessible, but they both have different focuses so I recommend reading both.

Todd May structures his interpretation around the question "How might one live?" This is a different question from the one that has traditionally been asked in Western philosophy, "How should I live?" Todd May begins his book on Deleuze by explaining the difference between these two questions, and by relating Deleuze's attempt to answer this question to similar attempts made by philosophers like Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. Foucault and Derrida ask a similar question but, unlike Deleuze, they consider a general critique of ontology as a necessary first step in opening the possibility of asking such a question. It is ontology, and metaphysics, which attempts to determine the essence of beings, as well as their possibilities, which tends to stifle the question "How might one live?" since one's possibilities are already determined by one's essence. Deleuze does not reject ontology, but attempts to work out an ontology that allows for the possibility of the new, and creative transformation.

This leads Deleuze to prioritize difference over identity. This is actually one of the more difficult aspects of Deleuze's philosophy to grasp because it is one of Deleuze's contentions that representation is incapable of grasping difference in itself. Representation always subordinates difference to identity and the identity of the concept. Traditional ontology begins, for example, with the highest generalities (genus) and determines them through difference (species) until it reaches the individual. In other words, it works from the top down, and in so doing subordinates difference to the identity of the concept. Deleuze's ontology works from the bottom up by starting with pure differences which lie behind the processes of individuation and speciation. These differences, however, cannot be represented since representation lives in the element of the concept.

Todd May comes up with what I think is a good analogy for how it is still possible to talk about difference despite the fact that it escapes representation. Todd May argues that Deleuze attempts to palpate difference. I actually had to look up the term, as it was not a term I was familiar with, but it is the method that doctors use when they try to determine the size, shape, firmness and location of something by pressing on an area of the body. This is what the doctor is doing, apparently, when they press on your abdomen and ask you where it hurts. Deleuze is doing something similar. Deleuze is attempting to see difference by tracing the effects it has on the world with which we are all familiar. Palpation seems to me to be a good analogy for what is usually called the transcendental method of argumentation. You cannot see something directly, but we can infer its existence through its effects.

Todd May uses his guiding question, "How might one live?" as an organizing principle as he makes his way through Deleuze's interpretations of Spinoza, Bergson, Nietzsche, philosophy, science, language, and politics, and also attempts to explain how difference is present within all of these fields, and the effects difference has in all of these fields. All in all I would say this is a very successful introduction to one of the most important philosophers of the previous century.

Excellent
By Mark E. Simpson
As someone who is well-versed in Foucault, less so in Deleuze (and not at all in Derrida), I found the first chapter of this book to be a lovely simple yet fruitful little exposition situating these three titans of contemporary French philosophy as three distinctive responses to the Nietzschean legacy. Further, May helpfully distinguishes Deleuze in a way that separates him from Foucault/Derrida on the question of ontology. Now, these may be obvious/broad distinctions, but since this is an introduction, it is appropriate, and the text is written in a way that is very useful/accessible for english-speaking philosophers who may be unfamiliar (or worse) with Deleuze and other French philosophers.

I really enjoyed and highly recommend some of May's other works (e.g. the one on poststructuralist anarchism and between genealogy and epistemology on foucault), but I think this is perhaps his best; an elegant and powerful contribution that fills an important need--making Deleuze more readily accessible to students and anglophone philosophers.

With Madam President, current cohost of The View and former White House Communications Director Nicolle Wallace returns with an electrifying portrait of three powerful women on a day that will change the country forever.

Charlotte Kramer, the forty-fifth President of the United States, has done the unprecedented in allowing a network news team to document a day in her life—and that of her most senior staff. But while twenty news cameras are embedded with the president, the unthinkable happens: five major attacks are leveled on US soil. Her secretary of defense, Melanie, and her press secretary, Dale, must instantly jump to action in supporting the president and reassuring the country that the safety they treasure is in capable hands.

But secrets have always thrived in President Kramer’s White House. With all eyes on them and America’s stability on the line, all three women are hiding personal and professional secrets that could rock the West Wing to its very foundations…and change the lives of the people they love most.

With an insider’s sharp eye and her trademark winning prose, Nicolle Wallace delivers a timely novel of domestic and political intrigue that is impossible to put down.

Madam President

CHAPTER ONE

Melanie

Are my latest changes to the speech in the version that’s in the teleprompter?” Charlotte asked as she held up a draft with her edits marked in black ink.

“Yes, Madam President. I input your final revisions myself,” Melanie replied in her usual calm manner.

“What time are we doing this?” Charlotte was tapping her perfectly polished fingernails on the desk and swinging one of her legs back and forth underneath it as she reread her remarks. Melanie recognized both behaviors as two of Charlotte’s relatively well-disguised nervous tics.

“You’ll go on the air at eleven-oh-two to give the anchors a couple of minutes to set things up and announce that you are addressing the nation live from the Oval Office.”

“What time is it now?”

“It’s ten minutes before eleven, Madam President.”

Charlotte nodded and looked down at the text once more. After about twenty seconds, she looked up again.

“I’m sorry, Mel, how much time until we go live?”

“About ten minutes, Madam President. Can I get you something to drink?”

“I’m fine.”

For the first time since they’d met nearly six years earlier, Melanie worried about Charlotte’s ability to perform her official duties with her trademark steadiness. They were alone in the Oval Office, and it was Melanie’s job to get the president through the next twenty-five minutes.

It wasn’t Melanie’s actual job, but this wasn’t a typical day. Melanie served as the secretary of defense, a post she’d held for the last eighteen months, ever since Charlotte had been reelected for a second term as the country’s forty-fifth president. Melanie’s Oval Office assignment was as unexpected as the events of the previous twelve hours.

The sound of jets patrolling the airspace above the White House and the beams of light from the helicopters hovering nearby weren’t helping with Charlotte’s unusually high levels of agitation and impatience.

“Madam President, I need you to relax a little bit, or you’re going to scare people more.”

“Jesus Christ, Melanie!” Charlotte exploded.

Maybe it’s good that she’s blowing off a bit of steam, Melanie thought.

“Without any of our guys having a goddamned clue or hint of warning, terrorists attacked five cities. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of people are dead. And we don’t have any idea if there are more plots under way or where the attacks originated. People should be scared.”

“I crossed that section out of your speech. Thought it might be a little too much straight talk for tonight,” Melanie deadpanned.

Charlotte didn’t smile. She stared down at the pages of her speech, but Melanie could tell she wasn’t reading them. Melanie moved toward one of the sofas in the middle of the Oval Office and ran her hand back and forth across the smooth linen fabric that she’d selected when Charlotte had tasked her with renovating the room at the beginning of her first term. The president hadn’t given her any direction other than to stick to one color. She had a thing for monochromatic dressing that extended to her interior-decorating preferences. The fabric was so pale and delicate that the sofas needed to be recovered quarterly, but Charlotte said that they sent a strong signal to everyone to keep their feet off the furniture. She’d thwarted several attempts to recover them in a more practical material.

The down-filled couches were inviting, but Melanie knew that if she sat, her twenty-four-hour day would catch up with her, and she’d never be able to muster the energy to get back up. She glanced down at her BlackBerry. Her executive assistant made fun of her for still carrying the antiquated device, but she’d had a BlackBerry (at times, she’d had two or three of them) since her first days at the White House almost two decades earlier. Now she also carried an iPhone that her husband, Brian, had given her the year before and that she used for personal communications with him and with their friends and family. Melanie scrolled through the e-mail messages on the iPhone and opened a message from Brian. He was in the White House briefing room, about forty feet away from the Oval Office, with the rest of the White House correspondents. His message simply said, “Good luck with the speech. Call when you can. Love you.” Melanie skimmed what looked like hundreds of unopened e-mails. They’d have to wait until after Charlotte’s address. When she looked up, she was surprised to see the president standing in front of the two televisions in her private dining room. Melanie walked toward the side of the Oval Office that opened into the dining room and watched Charlotte closely for a couple of minutes. She was wearing a perfectly tailored black Armani jacket with matching pants. A pale blue silk blouse peeked out from under the jacket, and the initials of her twins, P and H, hung from a white-gold chain around her neck. Her thick blond hair was tucked behind her ears. She had stepped out of her black heels, and in her bare feet, she looked diminutive. Her makeup artist was highly skilled, but Melanie thought she’d been a tad heavy-handed with the blush. Charlotte wouldn’t tolerate another touch-up on a night like this, though. Melanie shifted her weight from one foot to the other and moved closer to the door so that Charlotte would know she was there.

“You’re the one who’s not having a normal reaction, Melanie. No one should be as stoic as you are right now. Frankly, it’s jarring,” Charlotte said without looking away from the carnage on the screens.

“Madam President, you’ve mistaken my jet lag for tranquillity. I woke up in Iraq this morning, and with the time change, I think that was about twenty-four hours ago.”

“That was this morning?” Charlotte’s eyes were still glued to the screens.

“Doesn’t it seem like a thousand years ago?”

Charlotte muted the televisions and turned to face Melanie.

“I think it’s safe to say that everything has changed since then, don’t you?”

Before Melanie could conjure up an appropriate response, the network producer who was directing the live coverage of Charlotte’s speech knocked on the door of the Oval Office. Melanie had instructed him to do so when they were two minutes out so she could get Charlotte seated and check the camera shot.

The president had insisted that they be left alone in the Oval Office after the hair and makeup people left. It was unheard of to leave the president alone in the Oval Office for a televised address to the nation without someone who was trained in video production, but Melanie had held just about every job in the White House communications and press departments during her decade and a half of service in the executive branch of government.

“That was your two-minute warning, Madam President. You’re going to do this just as we rehearsed it. As you requested, it’s just you and me in here, so please do not fidget in your seat. I can keep you in focus, but if you move out of the camera shot, there’s not much I can do to reframe you with my limited TV-production skills. Don’t move your chair or stand up. And try not to do any forced smiling. You want to appear somber but not alarming.”

“Anything else?” Charlotte snapped. She took her seat behind the desk and held up one hand to shield her eyes from the glare. Lighting the Oval Office for an evening address was one of the trickier production feats. The production staff had set up freestanding stadium lights on either side of the president’s desk to illuminate her properly for the TV audience. As she read through her speech one final time, Melanie thought she looked surly, but she didn’t want to stoke her ire with any more instructions.

Melanie checked the shot and confirmed that it looked OK with the professionals by opening the door a crack. The director gave her a thumbs-up, and Melanie shut the door.

“We’re all set, Madam President. You look great.”

Melanie took a deep breath and smiled reassuringly at her boss. They hadn’t been alone in the Oval Office together in months, and until today, Melanie hadn’t worked with her on a speech since she’d left her post as White House chief of staff at the end of Charlotte’s first term as president. Despite the current tragic, catastrophic circumstances, it wasn’t uncomfortable to be with each other like this. Melanie and Charlotte had worked together long enough to take exactly what they needed from one another. Melanie was acting cooler than she felt because she sensed in Charlotte a hotness that would not translate well on camera. For her part, Charlotte was using these few precious moments to process what had happened before packing away her horror and fear and projecting strength and resolve to the entire world.

Melanie suspected that Charlotte had chosen her for this assignment because she was the one person with whom there was no pretending. The extraordinary step had been taken to transport Melanie from Andrews Air Force Base, where she’d landed an hour earlier, to the South Lawn of the White House in one of the helicopters typically designated as Marine One and used to transport Charlotte. Melanie assumed that it also had something to do with the fact that she’d been through something like this before. After all, she’d worked in the press office on September 11, 2001.

“You’re sure about the Longfellow poem?” Charlotte asked.

“Most presidents quote from scripture on occasions like this. You said that you didn’t want that, so I included the Longfellow quote. We are sixty seconds out, and I can’t replace it at this point, but if you want to drop it, the speech works fine without it.”

“No. I like it. It’s powerful. And you don’t think we use the word toward too much? It’s in here at least three times.” They’d chosen every word in the address with care.

“The speech is good, Madam President.”

Charlotte nodded. “I’ve got this,” she promised.

“I know you do.” Melanie smiled and said a silent prayer.

At that moment, the light on the camera started flashing. When the flashing stopped, Charlotte would be seen instantly by millions of people.

Melanie checked the teleprompter one last time to make sure the speech had loaded properly and then counted down with her fingers.

When the light stopped flashing, Melanie mouthed, “Go.”

Good Political Drama
By William D. Curnutt
First of all I would like to thank Net Galley and Simon & Schuster for providing me a review copy, for no cost, of this novel in exchange for an unbiased review.

If you were a fan of West Wing or enjoy the new TV series, Madam Secretary, then this book will be something that you thoroughly enjoy.

I felt that the book took some time to get into, since it talked about terrorist attacks on America and the Presidents response to those. The reason for this is that you don’t get back to those attacks until almost half way through the book.

But as I thought about it I realized that Nicolle Wallace took us through a detailed development of the cast of characters that was necessary for the story to come to life and for us to understand the responses of each of the people to the crisis that would face them.

The book is written as a “Day in the Life of” the President as it will entail mainly one 24 hour period of her administration, the day that terrorist attack 5 different sites in America.

You will follow the first female President as well as her female Vice-President, Defense Secretary and Press Secretary. Then there is the development of her Chief of State, Craig, one of the few men detailed in the book other than the husbands or boyfriends of the women of the Administration.

I thought the character development was very good. I thought that the personalities of the characters were developed and came to life very well in the crisis of the story. I particularly enjoyed how realistically Wallace painted President Kramer and her own personal crisis with her husband, loosing a good friend and then the strained relationship with her daughter. All of these things brought a very human quality to the President instead of painting her as just a Political President with no soul.

As you start to read, don’t get discouraged by not reaching the crisis too soon. You will find that the backstory development is highly necessary and it creates a wonderful read.

Enjoy!

I had hoped for a more positive presentation of a female administration.

Madam President, Nicole Wallace, narrator, Tavia Gilbert
The book fell short of my expectations. I thought it would more positively encourage the idea of a woman for President, but for me it was the opposite. The plot seemed a bit obvious, and it felt like chick lit rather than a more serious presentation of a significant subject. It felt like a rewrite of the 9/11 terror incident, but instead of George Bush, we have Charlotte Kramer at the helm. There didn’t seem to be anything new offered, except perhaps for a behind the scenes look at the emotional reactions of the players, and since all of the major players were women, it was a rather vain and emotional interpretation which did not inspire me to vote for a woman at all.
The story seemed preoccupied with the largely female characters’ diets, cosmetics, wardrobes, love lives, images and emotional reactions, rather than their professional portrayal as competent politicians and White House representatives able to rise above the moment to deal with whatever crisis presented itself. Too much emphasis was placed on minute, unimportant details in the face of a terrorist act that hit multiple cities and murdered scores of innocent people. Many of the women and men portrayed on the White House staff and in the Press Corps seemed shallow and self interested, arrogant and rude, demanding and ungracious. By and large, the men were depicted as incompetent or self-serving boobs, disloyal and backbiting, the woman as demanding, unable to be satisfied, shrill, conniving and over-emotional. Both men and women were portrayed as victims of their hormones. Few characters were truly admirable, but the men were even less so. The nicest male character was killed off.
The 45th President is Charlotte Kramer, a Republican and the first woman to hold that office. Hers is also the first unity administration. Her Vice President, Maureen, is a Democrat. Her marriage is suffering under the strain of her ambition. Her husband Peter has had an affair with her Press Secretary, Dale, who is still on her staff, one of her twins is acting out and causing her embarrassment, and a terrorist attack has just thrown her world into chaos. Soft targets in multiple cities have been struck with large numbers of casualties. The CIA and other intelligence services failed to anticipate it and it is disastrous.
I found the dialogue a bit clichd, often making me shake my head in disbelief. Rather than the tale intensifying with the search for the perpetrators of the terrorist attack, and bringing them to justice, it concentrated on petty grievances, pregnancies, romantic encounters and relationships, infidelity, extramarital affairs, and emotional outbursts.
The ending was a silly display of emotion, depicting a President and her confidant in an unrealistic, emotional moment, standing in a newly built nursery. It diminished the message the novel could have presented. I would think that working for the government and being engaged with National Security issues would require 100% of a person’s attention, if not more, and would not allow for having a child at their side, distracting them from the monumental decisions that have to be made on a moment’s notice. Having a child and having a high profile job are not always compatible pursuits. Sometimes, choices have to be made for the care of the child, to benefit the requirements of the country and not one’s personal life or needs.
The three most important characters were Dale, the Press Secretary, Melanie, the Defense Secretary, and Charlotte, the President, who shared the stage with alternating chapters devoted to each. Nicole Wallace is a good writer who knows her way around politics and Washington, having worked as a Press Secretary, Communications Director and Campaign Advisor, over the last decade and a half, for several administrations. This book exemplifies that knowledge, and is read extremely well by the narrator, Tavia Gilbert. I suspect that in the print version, I might not have like the book as much. I, therefore, recommend the audiobook because Gilbert breathed new life into a rather overworked theme.
