A beautiful book on a deep subject

The Handbook of Regular Patterns is 390 pages (plus biblio & index) of lovely black and white images. What ties them together is that they can be repeated to "tile the plane" i.e. to fill an indefinitely large page.
They are broken down into 17 kinds of tilings known as symmetry groups or wallpaper groups, each with its own sort of beauty (the Dutch artist M.C. Escher was well versed in the symmetry groups and used them extensively in his art). As a special bonus, the book also presents the 7 linear groups and a few point groups.
After studying the book for a while I was inspired to design and construct my own regular 2D pattern, a fish shaped tile based on the "p2" symmetry group. I cut about 20 tiles out of stoneware clay and fired and glazed them (over 10 years ago), but I still haven't installed them yet.
I have also used ideas from the book to help design quilting patterns and to make patterns for tile floors (all square tiles, but patterns in groups of tiles). I think the book is a useful item in a designer's toolbox.
An interesting topic not covered in the book (because it's not a true tesselation since it has no repeats) is the penrose tiling. Google for penrose tiling to see beautiful patterns based on pentagonal symmetry.

Excellent resource for pattern construction

Anyone interested in constructing repeating patterns, the history of design and ornament, quilting, M.C.Escher, geometry, tesselations, or mathematical concepts in the regular division of the plane, will find this hefty book an excellent resource. The historical examples are drawn from an astonishing variety of cultures, and following the exercises at the end of each chapter will give the reader a very thorough grounding in the subject.

intro to cell culture

I found this book to be very helpful. The information is current and clearly presented. (other texts I purchased had more recent publication dates, but were clearly out-of-date in the techniques and equipment used).
I run a high through-put cell culture lab (about 4000 T175 per week). I purchased the text mainly as a training aid.
50% of my staff 'person hours' come from part time college students who only stayed for one or 2 semesters, thus I am faced with having to train new staff often.
This text gives a good, clear introduction to the basics of cell culture and sterile technique and significantly cut down on the amount of time it took me to train new staff. I made it required reading for all my staff!

Dreads. Jatta. Ndiagne. Palu. Natty, knotted, ropelike locks. Curly knobs, tiny plaits, intricate weaves. Dreads are a modern phenomena with roots that reach as far back as the fifth century. According to ancient Hindu beliefs, dreadlocks signified a singleminded pursuit of the spiritual. Devotion to God displaced vanity, and hair was left to its own devices. In the West, locks are a relatively recent fashion, born of the Black Power movement of the sixties and the infiltration of reggae into popular music.

In "Dreads," photographers Francesco Mastalia and Alfonse Pagano capture the rebels of this natural hair revolution in all their beautiful, subversive glory. One hundred duotone portraits present dread-heads from all walks of life: a Brooklyn postal worker, a Japanese farmer, an Indian sadhu, a Jamaican drummer. Interviewed on location by the photographers, jatta-wearers from around the world wax philosophic about the integrity of their hair, and every stunning image confirms their choice. In her introduction, Alice Walker offers lyrical ruminations about her decision to let her own mane mat.

Today, trendsetters in Tokyo pay thousands of yen to have their poker-straight hair literally drilled into locks. The fact that the young and hip now go to such extremes to imitate what was originally a statement against artificiality proves the growing popularity of dreads. Beautiful People

As a locked hair style wearer and natural hair care provider I simply had to have this book. I mainly ordered this book to be used as a conversation piece in my natural hair salon. Well, this book is exactly that! The pictures and stories of people from different countries, nationalities and walks of life enlightened all of my clients who have read it. "Dreads" takes the reader into a whole new world about the beautiful style of locked hair.
One can clearly see that Dreadlocks doesn't necessarily mean unkept and dirty hair. There are images of the Rasta's (those whose locks have formed without any or little manipulation) as well as images of individuals who chose to carefully cultivate their head of locks. I find the images/photographs to be captivating and the articles to be enlightening. If you are into natural hair styling, photgraphy or just simply Locks then owning a copy of "Dreads" is an absolute must.

I bought this for my other half because he has locs and also because he always wanted the hardcover edition of this book. I surprised him one day by purchasing it as a gift. He still has the paperback version but this one has a different cover, so now he has two books to treasure. Also, the book holds a particular memory of a woman who passed in his life that originally had a copy of this book. She was an influential person in his development as a man/person, so I know purchasing this book meant a lot to him.

Universal Dreads

Dreads is a masterful work of superior photography accompanied by explanations of what dreadlocked hair means to each of the individuals included in the book. This book is a must-have for any true dreadlock enthusiast and an excellent conversation piece for a salon or living room coffee table. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Amazon actually carried brand new copies because the book was actually out of circulation for a while. Maybe with the re-emergence and popularity of dreadlocked hair the publishers decided to crank up the presses once again. Whatever the reason, I strongly suggest that you buy this book before it's no longer available. Dreads is a true work of art and offers unique perspectives that extend to many different continents and ethnicities.

Some good points, but not my favorite...

I found that reading "The New Articulate Executive" was a little difficult. It was written fairly dry, and I had a hard time keeping an interest - I pretty much had to make myself read it. There were a few good ideas and lessons though, mostly in the first half of the book.
One of the key takeaways was the POWER (Punch, One theme, Windows, Ear, Retention) formula: to have a strong start, have one theme in the presentation, support your theme with good examples, use conversational language in your presentation, and have a strong ending. Some ideas Toogood gave for having a strong start include beginning with the ending by giving an overview of the "big picture" in 45 seconds, telling a personal story that is related, and using humor, which is obviously very risky. When defining the outline of your presentation and theme, Toogood proposes two methods: the rocket and the necklace. The rocket uses sub-themes and examples to connect to your overall theme, while the necklace uses one theme (no sub-themes) with examples. Some ideas the author gave for having a strong ending include summarizing the key points, loop back to the beginning, and calling for action of your audience.
Toogood also mentioned some time-based tips that I felt were useful. The first of these tips was that an audience typically has an attention span of 18 minutes - he calls it the "18 minute wall." He recommends that the presenter switches gears every 18 minutes to keep the audience engaged by holding a Q&A session, showing a video clip, telling a story, etc. The second time-based tip he introduces is the "8 second rule," which states that the presenter has 8 seconds to grab the audience's attention. The last tip is the "8 second drill," which is more of an exercise in being able to bottom line your point in 8 seconds. He recommends starting at getting your bottom line down to 3 minutes, then working your way down to 8 seconds.
There are some other miscellaneous tips that Toogood gives that I thought were of interest. He suggests making graphics to scale when trying to show changes in growth or size, and simplifying charts and graphs as much as possible. I believe the latter suggestion is hard to do in my particular field because the business needs to be able to see the numbers rather than visualizing them.

A Great Book Now Even Greater

Until this book came out, it was really hard to imagine how Granville Toogood, or Granny, as he is known to his friends, colleagues and clients, could have improved on his original version of The Articulate Executive. But, now comes the NEW Articulate Executive, which IS new, interesting, sensible, insightful, and even more practical than its predecessor. It is also vintage Granville Toogood.

Here's a special tip. Skip right to page 215 and take The Articulate Executive Quiz. It's a very interesting self analysis. The quiz is your systematic roadmap to help maximize Granny's wisdom. It will also help you bring into focus your vision of yourself, how to articulate it and achieve it. Great leaders are articulate leaders. Visionary leaders can articulate their vision. Look, Act and Sound Like a Leader

The Author Granville N Toogood started with a very good point that "when you marry brains and talent with outstanding communications skills, the sky's the limit". I have to agree with the author that business people should borrow experience from politicians. Author clearly explains "Getting the message across" chapter with rocket and necklace theme and adding them to "POWER formula". The "8 second rule" and the five ways to get around the 18 minute audience attention span are valuable information. The "Powerpoint paradox" chapter got lot of valuable important information for readers who rely on PowerPoint too much. The 10 things never do, three rules; (1.)The Oreo, (2.) Get rid of those word slides, and (3.) Tell and shows are useful information.

This book is extremely helpful to everyone who wants to Look, Act, and Sound Like a Leader.

Very Good Book

I am a huge fan of Kim, and I really enjoyed this book. The good: the book was very neutral. Kim is a controversial celebrity, alot of people hate her, and the general media article on her usually twists the truth. Finding information on her that doesn't twist the facts is hard, but this book certainly did that. There are many claims about her, that have never been proven, that many will state as fact, this book doesn't do that. For instance, many claim that others do all the work for her businesses, even though there is no proof of this, the book gives her the credit. Another claim is that she does charity work for "PR" purposes; again, despite there being no proof to back this up. The book gives her credit for her charity work, which is unusual. A few of the conspiracy theories are stated, such as her show possibly being scripted, but they don't seem to state it as the truth, but that some believe it is.
The other good things, I loved the pictures, there were plenty of those. The timeline was also nice, giving the time of her more important events.
There were a few things that kept it from getting five stars. One, the book is only 95 pages of information, for nearly $35, a bit pricey. The type is quite large, it took only about 3 hours to read the whole book. One other problem I had, much of the childhood information came from Kim's book, Kardashian Konfidential, which she did with Kourtney and Khloe. While there is some new information, if you have a read a bit on Kim, much of it you will already know.
In conclusion, if you simply want a book that doesn't slant everything against Kim, and tries to deal with her honestly, this is a great book. If you haven't read much on Kim, and want to know more about her, this would be a great book.
